Switzerland sparks the spirit of innovation
|
Switzerland and the US offer the most support to innovative companies and innovative players alike, as revealed
by the «Innovationsindikator 2009» of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). |
Switzerland has been ranked runner-up of the 17 highly developed countries that took part in the study. The US has
come out on top, whereas Sweden, the previous year's winner, has dropped to third place. Ireland, Spain and Italy
are rated among the least competitive countries when it comes to innovation. Germany has fallen one place from last
year, now holding ninth position.
Considering the sub criteria, the ranking shows Switzerland holding top position in the fields of traditional Swiss
excellence. Thus Switzerland tops the charts for example, in the category of education. According to the study, the
collaboration between economy and research is regarded as vital for gaining economic benefit.
In this area, Switzerland similarly holds first position.
The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) is the largest economic research institute in Germany. Its two core
mandates are applied economic research and economic policy. As an independent, non-profit institution, it is committed
