The study, published by the World Economic Forum (WEF), recognizes Switzerland not only as a most
attractive travel destination though – those tourism-related distinguished issues are also important
factors regarding Switzerland's general economic competitiveness. Switzerland, therefore, performs
well in the categories of Ground Transport Infrastructure (1st place), i.e. quality of roads, railroad
infrastructure, and ground transport network, Property Rights (1st), ICT infrastructure (3rd),
Transparency of Government Policymaking (7th), Safety and Security (8th), Creative Industries Exports
(9th), and Number of International Fairs and Exhibitions (14th).
Also regarding quality of living,
the WEF report includes valuable considerations: Switzerland enforces environmental sustainability
(2nd place), its natural environment is among the most pristine in the world (9th), and Switzerland
is rich in cultural and natural resources, including an impressive number of World Heritage cultural
and natural sites for a country of its size. Not least, the study characterizes the travel and tourism
sector overall as significant growth factor contributing to employment, rising national income, and
improving a country's balance of payments.
This year's Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report compares 133 travel and tourism destinations
worldwide, analyzing the factors and policies contributing to a country's travel and tourism
attractiveness. Based on three indices (Regulatory Framework; Business Environment and Infrastructure;
Human, Cultural, and Natural Resources) and several sub-indices, the study's information includes both
hard data – obtained from international (tourism) organizations, e. g. IATA or UNESCO – and survey data,
collected among CEOs and top business leaders from various economies.
