Switzerland again among most globalized countries
|
Switzerland belongs to the most globalized countries worldwide, according to the KOF Index of
Globalization 2009. |
The KOF Index of Globalization measures the economic, social, and political dimensions of
globalization. In the year 2009, Switzerland takes 4th place after Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands
respectively. With regard to the specific rankings, Switzerland continues to outshine in the social
globalization ranking (2nd) and again performs well in the political globalization ranking (7th).
The KOF Index of Globalization facilitates comparison of the degree and changes in globalization over
a large number of countries (158 in 2009) and more than 30 years (1970-2006). The Swiss index increased
continuously between 1970 and 2000, and since the 1990s, Switzerland has been among the world's five
most globalized countries.
The KOF index is based on the economic, social, and political dimensions of globalization. While the
economic dimension of the index measures long distance flows of goods, capital, and services as well
as information and perceptions that accompany market exchanges, the social dimension focuses the spread
of ideas, information, images, and people whereas the political dimension captures diffusion of
government policies.
