Switzerland – the most competitive economy in Europe

Switzerland was named the most competitive economy of Europe in the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook
2008. However worldwide, Switzerland ranks fourth. |
The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, published annually by the internationally renowned business school
IMD, Lausanne, lists 55 economies according to 331 criteria that measure how the nations create and
maintain conditions favorable to businesses. Switzerland placed particularly well in location criteria
such as attractiveness of fiscal policy (2nd), productiveness of labor relations (2nd), and high worker
motivation (2nd), as well as business language skills (1st) and general quality of life (1st). According
to the IMD Swiss press release, Switzerland was the third most attractive destination for foreign direct
investment.
